Amazon rainforest, 2022
The Amazon rainforest, also called the lungs of the planet, has disappeared at the speed of 40 square kilometers per day since 1988. Cut down for timber, to make way for palm oil, soy or feed production or for pasture, the forest has also suffered in large fires. If this deforestation continues, large areas will turn into savannas and the Amazon will turn from a carbon sink into an emission source as the life-supporting ecosystems disappear.
The artwork is a memorial for those parts of the Amazon ecosystems that are already lost. Its repetitive rhythm points out how small deeds impact the big picture unnoticed. That, which we consider remote to us, still affects all of us on this small, fragile planet. It is our joint task to care for our unique, invaluable environment.
